How To Bake Acrylic Paint On Glass? Step By Step Guidance

Painting the glass with acrylic is a hobby, entertainment and part of our decorative home items. But it’s annoying and diffident to see the paint cracking or peeling. No worries, as you can overcome the problem if you bake acrylic paint on glass.

I still have painted glassware collections from previous years, like wine bottles, mason jars and glass cups, and I promise you will not distinguish if the paint is fresh or aged. The main reason is I’ve painted and baked the colour accurately.

Don’t worry; I will share secrets and thorough guidance with you on how to seal or bake the paint on glass. Moreover, we’ll talk about why painting and priming accurately play a significant role in making the paint long-lasting on glass.

How To Bake Acrylic Paint On Glass?

Put the wet-painted glass in an oven and raise the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Let the glassware stay in the oven for 25 minutes. Remove the glassware when the oven is cool down to room temperature. Your paint is now baked and permanent.

How To Make Acrylic Paint Permanent On Glass?

Painting the glassware with acrylic paint and letting it dry in the air is not enough if you want a long-lasting adherence, vibrancy and touch on your glass items. You need to follow three stages:

  • Priming the glass surface
  • Painting glass accurately
  • Baking the paint

These steps are definitely not new to you, and you might know how to prime, paint and bake the paint. But how to proceed with them correctly and use suitable materials make the difference. Even if you bake the paint following the correct method still, priming and painting incorrectly will affect the paint adherence. So I decided to talk about all these steps in detail.

Please read the post thoroughly, and don’t skip a single point to make the paint permanent on the glass.

How To Prime The Glass?

What do we mean by primer? It is a base coat applied to a surface before painting to make the bonding between the paint coat and the surface stronger.

Glass has a smooth and non-porous surface making it challenging for the acrylic paint to stick to its surface. You can’t sand down (to make the surface rough) the glass as it will damage the appearance and gloss of the glassware.

Moreover, sanding can even thin down the glass, making it brittle. So the only alternative left is priming. How to prime glass is discussed below.

Materials needed

  • Gesso or Berger primer
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Cotton pieces
  • A soft piece of fabric
  • Flat brush
  • Warm water
  • Soap
  • Bowl

Procedure To Prime Glass

  • Wash the surface with warm water and soap to decrease the load of dirt, dust particles and apparent stains.
  •  Clean oil stains using glass cleaner. If you want an affordable way, you can clean the surface using alcohol or even vinegar.
  • Pour some primer into a bowl and stir well to mix and make it consistent.
  • Dip the brush into the bowl and take a small quantity in your brush.
  • Start applying over the glass surface evenly, and make sure you put a light hand and use thin layers. Apply 2-3 layers.
  • Let the primer evaporate solvent and dry in moderate air.
Note: If you’re using spray primer. Hold it a few inches away from the surface and apply the primer by moving the glass horizontally and vertically.

Can you use Acrylic Paint on Glass?

Yes, you can use acrylic paint on glass. Acrylic paint adheres well to glass surfaces and dries quickly, making it a popular choice for painting on glass.

However, it’s important to properly prepare the glass surface by cleaning it thoroughly and possibly roughening it slightly with sandpaper to help the paint adhere better. Additionally, sealing the paint with a clear sealant after it dries can help protect the paint and ensure its longevity on the glass surface.

How To Paint Glass With Acrylic Paint?

To keep paint peeling off the glass, you have to apply the paint correctly instead of just random painting and baking. Acrylic paint is quite simple and convenient to be used and manipulate. So you don’t need to be professional to work with it. I’ve discussed the procedure of painting on glass with acrylic paint in simple steps.

Materials needed

  • Acrylic paint
  • Bowl
  • Paint thinner
  • Flat and round brushes
  • Newspaper
  • Gloves
  • Tape
  • Stirrer

Step By Step Procedure To Paint Glass

  • Apply tape on the parts of the glass you don’t want to paint on. Covering some portions can also be a part of creating distinct designs.
  • Pour some acrylic paint into the bowl and mix it well using a stirrer or any hard metal tool. It will make the colour consistent.
  • Take a brush and load it with the paint by dipping it into a bowl full of acrylic paint.
  • Start applying the paint over the glass surface using horizontal and then vertical strokes. Use a flat brush for covering larger portions and round brushes for detailing.
  • You’re done painting glass with acrylic paint.
Note
You can add paint thinner to acrylic paint to make it less viscous.

How To Bake Paint On Glass?

Before going on to the procedure, let’s find out the answer: Can you bake acrylic paint on glass? Baking acrylic paint on glass is the ultimate step in painting or designing. It helps the paint dry quickly and provides a thick, resistant paint coating.

No matter how many tips you follow or how accurately you prime and paint the glassware, if you ignore baking the paint, there’s a high chance the paint will peel and crack sooner.

So it’s crucial to follow this last step and do it correctly. Many people go for baking glass paint without knowing how to proceed. They just put the glassware inside an oven, set the temperature and remove the material. No, it’s not like that. I’ve explained the detailed procedure of baking painted glass.

Materials needed

  • Painted glassware
  • Oven
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Procedure

Step 1: Prepare the oven

The first step is setting the oven. Just clean it from the inside using a piece of cloth. Put the baking sheet inside and floor it with parchment paper.

Step 2: Put Glassware In the Oven

Now take the painted cups, bottles, jars etc. and put them over the baking sheet floored with parchment paper. Make sure the paint on the glass is dry enough. Because when you hold them, the designs will be spoiled if the paint is not dry to the touch.

Moreover, ensure the glassware is not touching the oven’s roof or any other part directly. If the glass comes in contact with the oven directly, it may break.

Step 3: Set The Temperature

Now close the oven and set the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is enough to cure the paint. Below this temperature will increase baking time, ultimately affecting the glass material. Above this temperature may also cause breakage of the glass.

Step 4: Leave For Baking

After setting the temperature, set the timing to 25 minutes. And leave it for baking. It is enough time to cure paint on glass materials. Extended time may indirectly cause your glass material to get weaker and brittle.

Step 5: Turn Off the Oven And Let It Cool Down

After the provided time, please turn off the oven, open its door and let it cool down to room temperature. Please don’t remove the glassware immediately; instead, let them become cooler inside the oven. Removing them while they are still hot can make them brittle.

The reason is abrupt cooling. Glassware needs to be cool down gradually to protect them from breaking down.

Step 6: Remove The Glassware

It will take up to 10-15 minutes usually for the process of cooling. Remove the glassware once you feel they are cool enough to be touched.

Step 7: You Are Done

Congrats, you’re done baking paint on glass. The painting is now cured and adhered to the surface firmly. You can add the glassware to your collection now.

Following the method above, you can go for baking painted wine glasses, wine bottles, Mason jars and all other small glassware that can adjust in the oven.

Caution: Don’t preheat the oven to prevent the glass from breaking.

How To Bake Acrylic Paint On Wine Glass?

Wine glasses are fun to decorate and colour. Painting these glasses adds a new taste to your tongue through your eyes. They can be painted with various floral, weather and abstract designs. Moreover, you can design them for your loved ones with hearts, love messages and splashing colours. To make the acrylic paint permanent, you can bake the paint on wine glasses the following way.

  • Paint the glasses and let them dry finely.
  • Put them inside the oven over a baking sheet.
  • Set the temperature to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Turn off the oven after 30 mins.
  • Let the wine glasses cool down inside the oven.
  • Remove them and add them to your collection.

You can repeat the same procedure with wine bottles. Instead of throwing them, you can recycle them by painting them with acrylic. Use more dark and bright colours with wine bottles as they are not as transparent as wine glasses are.

How To Bake Acrylic Paint On Mason Jars?

What do we mean by mason jars? They are glass cans used for preserving different kinds of food, especially powdered or grained food. They are a vital part of our kitchens. You can find a wide collection and sets of Mason Jars on Amazon.

I love designing and painting these jars with acrylic paint. My woman appreciates me for gifting her these jars. Thank God I don’t have to buy costly gifts. Just kidding! By the way, you can bake these jars the same way discussed above.

How To Seal Acrylic Paint On Glass At Home?

Besides baking, there is another way of making paint permanent on glass which is known as sealing. It’s the primary priority, and many artists choose sealing paint instead of going for baking.

Both ways of protecting the paint from peeling have pros and cons. But what can you use to seal acrylic paint on glass? There are two ways of sealing paint on glass.

  • Spray sealing
  • Brush on sealing

Sealing Acrylic Paint On Glass Using Spray Sealer

  • Choose the right spray sealer and buy from a genuine manufacturer. I usually prefer Aleene’s 26412 Spray, as it is good to be applied to the glass material. It dries fast and gives a gloss finish.
  • Put on gloves, mask and goggles as personal protective equipment.
  • Shake the spray well and hold it a few inches away from the glass.
  • Begin spraying and move it over the material. Make sure to cover all the sections.
  • Apply a second layer of sealer if needed. But let the previous one dry first.
  • Finally, put the material under a fan or near a window for drying.
  • You’re done with sealing the paint.

Sealing Acrylic Paint On Glass Using Brush On Sealer

  • Select a quality brush on sealer designed specifically for acrylic paint. I suggest mod podge. It works well with acrylic paint.
  • Pour it into a cup or bowl and stir it with a stick or stirrer.
  • Dip the brush into the sealer and apply it over the glass.
  • Use gentle strokes and apply the paint vertically and horizontally.
  • Apply 2-3 thin layers and provide enough time for drying between consecutive layers.
  • Finally, leave the sealed surface for air drying.
  • You’re done.

Difference Between Curing, Baking And Sealing

Curing paint on the glass means drying the paint entirely from the upper to the lower layer. Acrylic paint takes 12 to more than 48 hours to get fully cured.

Baking the paint on the glass means providing enough heat to the colour to make it dry thoroughly. As we know, acrylic paint is water-based; once the water evaporates, it leaves hard colour behind. Heating increases evaporation.

Sealing the paint on the glass means applying a top layer of sealant material to protect the paint from weathering and physical damage.

Can You Varnish Acrylic Paint On Glass?

Yes, you can varnish acrylic paint on glassware in order to seal it. This can provide a protective coating and enhance the appearance of the painted surface. However, there are a few important considerations to keep in mind while varnishing acrylic paint.
