Health Concerns Associated With Using Acrylic Paint On Natural hair

There are multiple reasons why acrylic paint is bad for your hair, but the primary concern is your health. You would never like to compromise it over hair dyes. Many doctors even forbid using normal hair dyes due to their hazards.

So, can you dye your hair with acrylic paint? Well, you may decide better after knowing the harmful effects of using acrylic paint as a hair dye. Read below:

  • Dermatitis

Acrylic paint can cause dermatitis. It is a disease of the skin and is common in people using different dyes for hair. The paint can worsen the situation as it contains even more harmful chemicals like metals and polymers.

  • Allergic Reactions

Can acrylic paint cause allergic reactions? Yes, it can lead to allergic reactions in the scalp, which causes severe itching and bleeding from the scalp. Acrylic paint is immunogenic, meaning that it stimulates the immune system to repel it, which in turn, makes you inconvenient.

  • Edema

There are chemicals, including amines, in acrylic paint that is the real culprit. These harmful molecules can lead to swelling and sometimes edema, and angioedema on the face and head.

  • Tangled Hair

Acrylic paint is water-based and has resin. The resin is a polymer that is adhesive and keeps the molecules bound together. This can cause your hair to get tangled when the paint is dried out, and it will be really diffuse to revive your hair again.

  • Hair Fall

If you keep on painting hair in acrylic on a routine basis, you lose your hair. The scalps eventually lose blood supply, and hair strands get thinner and weaker. Even the roots start disappearing, and you may get bald in no time.

What Paint Is Safe For Hair?

There are many manufacturers claiming their hair dyes and colors are safe and skin-friendly, but it’s for temporary usage. If you keep on dyeing your hair every other day, you’ll definitely face complications.

People think that an ammonia-free hair dye is the hair color for them and that it is not going to cause any problems. But that’s not right. Ammonia-free hair colors contain amines in them that also can cause irritation and allergies.

The commonly known hennas that are available in the market are used as hair dye by most people, thinking that they are 100% organic, natural, and not going to cause any problems. You are wrong because most of these contain a product or chemical named PPD, which is your enemy.

How To Dye A Synthetic Wig With Acrylic Paint?

I’ll tell you how you can dye a wig using acrylic paint, but before you get into the post, I have to tell you it’s really just to change a little tint of it. You can’t really change the colour of it entirely anyways.

It always happens sometimes when you buy a wig,  get it home, and it’s like really not the colour you want it. Well, this happened to me a few times, and I get really annoyed because we all know wigs are pretty expensive.

So when I was browsing for my new Carmel wig from Alexa Turney, I was looking at colours really specifically because she has like a darkish blue-grey colour, and it is really not easy to find, so I was looking at Area Lakes, and they had a sale with some wigs, I ordered one, and I was like, it’s pretty much good.

But when it came in, it was more like a purplish color. And I was like, No, that ain’t it. So yeah, I’m really picky about my colours usually. It cost me 30 bucks for that wig because I got it on sale. Anyways, 30 bucks is still a lot.

This technique is just to change the tint of the wig. It will not change the colour or make a big difference.

Materials You Need

  • Elastic
  • Gloves
  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Paint Brush
  • Comb
  • Dummy Forehead
  • Scissor

Step By Step Procedure

Here is a complete step-by-step guide on how to dye wig with acrylic paint.

Step 1: Prepare The Wig

The very first step in dyeing a wig is shaping it. If your wig is too long from the corners, cut it with scissors before dyeing it. Now, after it is roughly cut, you go and straighten it. Then adjust the length of the wig and correct imperfections.

Now put your wig on top of the forehead, brush it with your fingers, and pin it down to the forehead. If you have a wig stand, that would be so much more convenient.

Step 2: Protect Your Workplace

Alright, now that this is all done, let’s get to it. You need to start off by protecting your workstation. Just tape down the paper to where your wig will be. Then you must also put the plastic bag over the head and tape it down.

Step 3: Prepare Acrylic Paint Mixture

The next step is to make your acrylic paint mixture. I really recommend just using one bottle of paint that is the colour you want. Remember that you need a darker colour than the colour you want to dye your wig because this technique will only change the tint of the wig. You also can’t dye a darker wig to a lighter colour.

Then you need to add a little bit of water to paint. Right to make it  ¼ water and ¾ paint. You want to water down your paint a little to thin it but keep the paint texture. The paint will dissolve faster if you use warm water, not boiling hot.

Step 4: Begin Dyeing The Wig

Now you must section off the wig’s top part using elastic. Now start dying wig with acrylic paint and put on your rubber gloves because this is going to get messy. Make sure to occasionally give the hair a little brush to ensure the paint goes everywhere. Don’t forget the roots.

Now that the whole head is covered in paint, you are going to want to brush it out a bit and check everywhere to make sure you didn’t forget any spots.

Step 5: Let Wig Dry

Let the wig dry overnight or for a full day, depending on the length of the wig. It helps the acrylic paint stick better to the hair. Ensure you don’t bake or use any heat source to dry the wig since it can cause a great loss. You may ruin the hair quality.

Step 6: Wash Your Wig

Now remove the pins and take your wig to the sink. Put your wig under Luke’s warm water and soak the whole thing. You can add some conditioner to help untangle it. Go with your fingers gently and try to remove the hardness of the dried paint. Don’t forget to wash the inside of the wig as well.

Step 7: Let the Paint Sit

Then, to help dissolve the paint,  just let it sit in water overnight. Once it has sat long enough, it’s time to let it dry. You also want to use your fingers gently to press on the hairs to remove residues of paint. You may also shake the wig to remove any paint residue.

You’re done now. But how long does acrylic paint hair dye last? Well, it depends. If you wash the wig frequently, it may last only a week or two. But normally, the color lasts for two to three months on hair.

Don’t dry your wig in direct sunlight. It can damage the paint and hair.

Can You Use Acrylic Paint To Synthetic Dye Hair?

You can use the paint to colour synthetic hair like those of a wig or barbie doll toys. The paint works well with synthetic hair as compared to natural one.

But how to dye synthetic hair with acrylic paint? Well, the procedure is simple and similar to that of painting a wig. However, it is necessary to thin down the paint just like ink so that it spreads through the hair strands thoroughly.

Will Acrylic Paint Wash Out of Hair?

Acrylic paint is washable of hair. But make sure you wash it immediately if you don’t want it to dry and stick. The simplest way is washing your hair with warm water and shampoo.

Warm water will dissolve the paint, while shampoo is for removing it thoroughly. Once the paint is removed, you’ll have to use a conditioner to revive the hair texture.

Can You Dye Your Hair With Paint That Is Non-Toxic?

I don’t recommend this because it’s not only about the toxicity. Paints contain multiple chemicals that affect your hair growth and color and lead to hair loss.
